Product Overview
Our customers spoke and we listened! The result of several years of fine-tuning customer suggestions and feedback, The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading, Revised Edition has been split into an Instructor Book and a Student Book.
The Student Book is child-friendly and visually appealing, starting with just one letter per page in uppercase and lowercase (we even show the common variations for letters that can be written in more than one way), and working up to full sentences and paragraphs. It includes only the text that the student needs, so that they can focus on reading instead of being distracted by the instructor's text.
With this Student Book and the required Instructor Book, parents will be able to take their children from the basics all the way to a fourth-grade reading level.

No, they are not compatible. If you use the original teacher’s book, a separate student book is not required.

No, they are not compatible. Some lessons have changed…enough that it wouldn’t match up.

Question
Lydia L. –
With the student Edition, as I looked at the sample pages, what is the objective for the pages with only the letters pictured? Is the student to write the letters out on the page or is it for them only to see the letters and repeat the sounds?
Thank you,
Lydia

It is for the student to see and repeat. It keeps the flow of lessons the same, and is particularly helpful for letters that appear more than one way in printed books (lowercase a, for example).

Please change the font, so that a capital I and a lower case l are not exactly the same shape. This is something that can easily be picked up as readers progress, but is an unnecessary distraction at this stage. Pictures might also be a nice addition, but otherwise a solid, helpful book.

Thank you for your review and input!
We use the vertical line I throughout the book because that is what the student will see most often in books, but both versions are taught in the initial lesson. Pictures can distract from print and encourage guessing, so are intentionally not included.

We just switched to this program after having some struggles with first grade phonics clicking with another program. So far it’s going great. However, the font used in the students book is frustrating. The capital i and lowercase L are exactly the same…(Il) and the question mark used was an odd choice. I’ve never seen any shape like that in all my years reading books.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Erin! We use the most common versions of each letter because that is what the student will see most often in books, but both versions of capital I are taught in the initial lesson. It seems like having more of a difference would be most common, but it’s not.
The font was chosen to be easy to read, so the odd question mark probably just sneaked in with his friends.
I’m so glad it’s going well anyway!
