Product Description

Now updated and revised with new content!

Young students who learn to write well need one-on-one instruction—something which your child’s classroom may not offer.

In The Complete Writer series, Susan Wise Bauer turns every parent into a writing teacher. No experience is needed.

Drawing on her fifteen years of experience in teaching writing, Susan lays out a carefully-designed sequence of steps that will teach every student to put words on paper with ease and grace. This alternative plan for teaching writing combines the best elements of old-fashioned writing instruction with innovative new educational methods—and explains why so many writing programs fail.

Designed for elementary-aged writers and for older students who still struggle, Writing with Ease builds a sturdy foundation of basic skills for grades 1–4 (or levels 1–4 for the older student who needs more work) all in the same book. Diagnostic tests within the book will help the parent to determine where the child needs to start and which workbook the child will need.

Two paths to Writing With Ease

You can use this one Writing With Ease Instructor Text to provide four years of scripted, step-by-step writing instruction by choosing your own copywork and dictation and having your student write their responses on the lined paper of your choice. Or…

You can use the various levels of Writing With Ease Workbooks, which also contain scripted, step-by-step writing instruction and already include everything you need to instruct your child. Each Workbook includes perforated Student Pages, appropriately lined according to the Workbook’s Level, for your student’s writing. Each workbook covers one grade. You can see samples and learn more about our workbooks through the links below.

Level 1 Workbook

Level 2 Workbook

Level 3 Workbook

Level 4 Workbook

This guide is not a required resource if you choose to use the 4 levels of workbooks. However this Instructor Text gives the teacher an overview of what your four years of writing instruction will look like as well as a deeper understanding of the philosophy behind them. It also provides helpful guidance in trouble-shooting for those who encounter difficulties.

What others are saying

  1. One person found this helpful

5 out of 5 We LOVE Writing With Ease!

I’ve been homeschooling for 11 years and have 6 kids. We’re on our 3rd round of Writing With Ease with our 3 youngest. It is so helpful in prepping kids for writing, taking notes, comprehension, finding the main idea in a story etc. Great job!

  2. Question

Is WWE instructor text, similar in content (eg reading passages) with the Level 1-4 workbooks, just condensed and without the student pages? How condensed is it? Would I be able to conduct lessons based on the Instructor Text alone? Thank you!

    • You could conduct lessons based on the Instructor Text alone, but you’d have to do more prep-work. The Instructor Text only provides reading passages and questions for about 1/4 of the lessons. It shows you what that week should look like, and then allows you to provide your own reading passages based on what the student is reading for other classes, or on your favorite books, or whatever you have around the house. The Workbooks do all of that prep for you: they provide the reading selections from a variety of classic children’s books, along with questions and ruled writing-pages for each lesson.

  3. 5 out of 5 Awesome Elementary Writing Curriculum

Writing with Ease has been a fantastic curriculum. Susan does a great job getting to the basics of where writing begins and builds upon these fundamentals. Simple, simple, simple is our homeschool motto, and that is exactly what WWE does for our family while still retaining quality. Assignments are four days a week and extremely easy to make-up or double-up if a day is skipped. Check out my video review for more details.

  4. Question

Hello! I have a copy of WWE: Strong Fundamentals…years 1-4 as well as the Complete Writer level 4 workbook student pages. I realize that the teachers manual is condensed due to it being an instruction book for all 4 levels. My question is this: am I understanding correctly that for the “Original Sentence Exercise” is where I as the teacher am to write out the summary narration that my student dictates to me? It seems odd because, if I’m doing the writing, I cannot then see if he’s using proper grammar (punctuation, capitalization etc).

    • For younger students (grades 1 and 2 especially), doing two things at once (creating the narration in their minds, and writing it out with proper grammar/spelling/punctuation etc) can be too difficult. By grade 4, if the actual mechanics of writing sentences have been mastered, the student can write the summary narration out herself.

  5. Question

We started homeschooling and my kids are grade 5 and 6. Do we start with WWE? Would WWE be instead of a writing program like IEW?

    • Yes, WWE is a writing program and can be used instead of IEW. For the fifth-grader, take a look at “Writing With Ease level 4.” For the sixth-grader, it may be time to begin “Writing With Skill, Level 1.” Here’s a little article from Dr. Bauer explaining some possible paths to take: http://downloads.peacehillpress.com/samples/pdf/WWEandWWSexplanation.pdf

  6. Question

May I know what is the difference (in terms of content) between “Instructor Text” and “Workbook”? If I purchase the “Workbook”, do I still need to purchase “Student Pages” for my kid to write on? Thank You!

    • The Instructor Text is an overall book for the instructor that covers all four “Levels” (years) of the program. It also gives helpful advice, answers frequently asks questions, and explains our approach to teaching writing. The Workbook is the actual course for the year. In the back of the workbook are perforated “Student Pages” that can be torn out when it is time for the student to do each exercise. The product we sell that is called “Student Pages” is an EXTRA set of the student pages…it’s useful if you’re teaching the program to more than one student. But if you’re only teaching one student, you probably don’t need the Student Pages.

  7. The version of the instructor text that you have is the most recent version. But you’d still want the whole workbook; it contains material that the instructor book doesn’t have (since each workbook is for a full year, and the instructor book covers all four years, we had to condense the instructor book a little.)

  8. 3 out of 5 page numbers

i downloaded the phd version of this book. Why is the page number on each page so odd? very curious….

  9. 5 out of 5

    good

  10. Question

I have two kids starting 2nd and 3rd grade this year. Unfortunately, we haven’t yet done much writing and I wanted to see what levels you would recommend I start them on. Thank you!
