Product Description

This Key to the Purple Workbook, a Purple Workbook, and the Core Instructor Text make up Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind: a complete course that takes students from basic definitions (“A noun is the name of a person, place, thing, or idea”) through advanced sentence structure and analysis—all the grammar skills needed to write and speak with eloquence and confidence.

This innovative program combines the three essential elements of language learning: understanding and memorizing rules (prescriptive teaching), repeated exposure to examples of how those rules are used (descriptive instruction), and practice using those rules in exercises and in writing (practical experience).

Program Features

• Scripted lessons make it possible for any parent or teacher to use the program effectively.

• Step-by-step instruction takes students from the most basic concepts through advanced grammatical concepts such as modal and hortative verbs and multiple functions of noun clauses.

• Extensive diagramming exercises reinforce the rules and help technical and visual learners to understand and use the English language effectively. All diagrams are thoroughly explained to the instructor/parent.

• Text for examples and exercises are drawn from great works of literature, as well as from well-written nonfiction texts in science, mathematics, and the social sciences.

• Regular review built into each year of work.

• The program is easily customizable to each student’s strengths and weaknesses.

Program Components

    • Core Instructor Text
      • Each year, you will go through the scripted dialogue, rules, and examples in this text. Instructor notes thoroughly explain any ambiguities and how to handle concepts that the student may find difficult. Sold separately. This text will be used for all 4 years of instruction and is a required resource.
    • Workbook
      • Designated by color (Red, Purple, Blue). Not to be done in any particular order. Each Workbook contains the same rules and examples—but each color set has different exercises and assignments. This allows students to develop a wide-range knowledge of how the rules are put to use in writing. Repetition solidifies the concepts, definitions, and examples in the student’s mind. Sold separately or as part of a Workbook and Key BundleA Workbook is a required resource for the student.
    • Key to the Workbook
      • Provides not only answers, but also explanations for the parent/instructor, and guidance as to when the answers might be ambiguous (as, in English, they often are).Sold separately or as part of a Workbook and Key Bundle. A matching color Key is a required resource.

Additional Resources

    • The Grammar Guidebook
      • All of the rules covered, along with the repeated examples for each, are assembled for ongoing reference here. This will become the student’s indispensable guide to writing through high school, into college and beyond. This book is not a required resource for the program but is highly recommended!
    • Diagramming Dictionary
      • Assembles into one handy manual all of the principles that govern diagramming the English language—from basic subject/predicate layout through advanced sentence structure and analysis. In every example, the simple subject is underlined once, the simple predicate is underlined twice, and the element being described is in green. Beautifully designed diagrams walk the reader through how to illustrate each and every part of the English sentence. This book is not a required resource for the program but is highly recommended regardless of the grammar program you are using!

You may notice that the Workbooks and Keys for this curriculum are now named by color (“Purple Workbook”) rather than by year (“Year 1”). That’s to help you understand that you can use these workbooks in any order. It’s a four-year cycle but the books can be done in any order. The Core Instructor Text still provides the instructions for all four years.
If you have one of the older copies that says “Workbook 1” instead of “Purple Workbook,” don’t worry; the content is still the same.

  1. Question

I have used Well Trained mind curriculum before but I am now looking at coming back. I have several ages. I am looking at FLL 1 for my 7 & 10 Year old. I have a 11 1/2, 13, and 14 year old as well. We have used a couple of different things and currently using Masterbooks but I am really liking this 4 book grammar set. I want to do it with all of them together so would we start with purple and all do it or should I have the 11 1/2 year old do book 3? she hasn’t had much formal grammar and last year was our first year in formal grammar.
    Thank you 🙂

    • GftWTM starts by reviewing the basics, so she should be able to dive right in unless she particularly struggled with her first year of formal grammar. She may not be able to move as quickly as the older two, though. Mastery is definitely the goal, so just be ready to make adjustments as you go. If you haven’t discovered our Articles & Videos section, we have some great information here on the Grammar page.

  2. Question

We have used all the levels of first language lessons and now, as my daughters are in middle school we are getting ready to use Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind. We are nearing high school and will soon need to be tracking grades for transcripts. My question is how do you track grades with this curriculum?

    • A good question. You should check out the syllabus for the Advanced Grammar course at our online Academy…this course uses GFTWTM as its textbook. Read the syllabus, including the grading basis, at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NGatCzR_ZjrDdsGcaDNcTxMOF-8sBY1yfvOVyZn2HSo/edit
The quizzes/tests are drawn mostly from the Review sections at the end of each unit, though our instructors also sometimes create their own.

  3. Question

Would we need to get a separate writing program (such as IEW) or is this product complete grammar + writing (like Rod & Staff Building English Series)?

  4. Question

My son is almost done with “First Language Lessons” Level 3 and he just turned 10. We went a little slow with grammar this year. Can I jump to start the purple book and skip level 4 of First Language Lessons??

  5. Question

What would be an approximate amount of time of daily instruction for a typical high schooler? Would I be off to say about 20 minutes?

    • You should probably expect to need 20 minutes for the earlier lessons, but 30-45 for the more advanced lessons (Week 20 and onward).
