Product Overview

Author:

Expanding on the principles presented in A Plan for Teaching Writing: K-12, this workshop offers very specific guidance in how to teach middle grade (logic-stage) students the skills of constructing an argument, outlining and writing from an outline. Also includes training in basic Socratic dialogue, and evaluation and grading.

Essential for those teaching all 5 – 8 grade students; since written argumentation is the basis of high school writing, this seminar is also highly recommended for those teaching high school students. Susan Wise Bauer, from the 2012 Society For Classical Learning conference.

I am beginning this with my 8th graders this fall after being with Classical Conversations for 3 years and wondered how to go about that. Will there be a lot of content they won’t understand since they haven’t used this curriculum before?

I’m not sure if you are referring to this audio workshop, Focus on the Middle Grades, or to our curriculum, so I will address both.

The middle grades audio workshop presents a way of thinking about writing that will help guide your students. It does not matter what they have used before. If they really struggle with writing, to the extent of having trouble getting words on paper, then you will probably want to listen to the elementary workshop as well.

If you are talking about our full writing curriculum, Writing with Skill, the vast majority of students in sixth grade or above can use it with no problem, and it does not matter what you used before. The student should be at the level of writing paragraphs and such before starting WWS.
