Product Overview

Author:

This groundbreaking writing series for middle-schoolers combines time-tested classical techniques – the imitation and analysis of great writers – with original composition exercises in history, science, biography, and literature. Scripted dialogue is provided for when students have difficulty, plus detailed guidance on how to evaluate their work. Straightforward, detailed explanations of how to construct and organize compositions prepares students for high-level rhetoric and composition. All source material for assignments is provided in the required workbook; no other books are needed.

Skills taught in Level 1 include one- and two-level outlining; writing chronological narratives, biographical sketches, descriptions, and sequences across the curriculum; constructing basic literary essays on fiction and poetry; researching and documenting source material; and using full sentences while texting. (The last one isn’t true; our powers are mighty but limited). We advise starting all students in Level 1.

I have the chance to enroll my 7th grader in a co-op class using this book. But they are on the 2nd half of the book. Is it possible to do the back half of the book before the first ?

The book slowly builds on itself (as does the entire series), so that would be extremely difficult to do. If you have some time before the co-op starts, it might be possible, depending on the student’s writing background and how quickly they work. Please reach out to [email protected] so we can advise you based on your particular student.

I have a rising fourth grader and seventh grader. Both attended a private Christian school that based their academic curriculum on state standards. They both have experience with narrative, opinion and expository text. At what level of this writing curriculum should I start each of them?

For the Writing With Skill program, we highly recommend that all students do the entire program in order without skipping any levels. The skills covered in Level 1 are foundations of what’s covered in Levels 2 and 3.

Students generally begin this program in grade 5, 6, or 7, but it is rigorous enough to be used with 9th or 10th graders as well. High school credit can be given for Level 2 & Level 3.

You can see the table of contents in the sample for each level (located under the product illustration). An older student with good basic skills can often progress through Level 1 in less than a year; look at the “Using this Program with Older Students” section in the Introduction of Level 2 that is included in the sample to see how this works.

I hope this is helpful. If you need additional guidance, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at [email protected] – we are happy to help.

In one of the previous reviews you mentioned a place to download a free 6 week sample of the grammar. When I go up that link I am not finding it? Could you please post the link to the sample? Thank you. Next year my dyslexic student will be in 7th. Reluctant reader. Doesn’t enjoy writing. Extremely bright for comprehension at college level. Has had 2 years of basic grammar and knows this front to back. Planning on using writing with skill level 1 because that’s what I have. Any advice for her 7th grade year? She’s not any easy student. I have to keep things very animated and engaging.

I cannot for the life of me find where I read what Thesaurus is recommended. Can you please tell me which thesaurus it is? There are a lot of choices and the one we have is really old and doesn’t have the info that seems needed for the activities. Thanks! Amber

My son will be in 10th grade this coming year. He was in public school until Middle School. His writing skills were awful then and Im trying to find a way to bridge the gap. Thus far we’ve made little to no improvement. He’s definitely a reluctant writer. I just want him to be able to communicate effectively. Do you reccomend starting with Level one or should we start with a higher level?

My rising 7th grade daughter has completed 3 years of IEW just completing level B. Now they are revamping their program and essentially it would be redundant to take the level they recommend for her even according to last year. She is a strong writer who enjoys writing. A friend recommended your Writing with Skill program. I looked at the various progressions but it seems IEW is recommended for high school and typically the recommendation has been to start with level 1 no matter what. I just fear she might not be challenged or find the material redundant to what she’s already learned. What might be the best fit for her?

I have a 5th grader who has not yet done the Writing with Ease. He has done 4 year of FLL and some other writing programs. Where should I start?
