This Blue Workbook, along with the corresponding Answer Key and the required Core Instructor Text, make up Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind: a complete course that takes students from basic definitions through advanced sentence structure and analysis – all the grammar skills needed to write and speak with eloquence and confidence, with the regular review needed for mastery.
There are three Workbooks (soon to be four); they are non-sequential and do not need to be done in a particular order. Each Workbook contains the same rules and examples – but each has completely different sets of exercises and assignments, allowing students to develop a wide-ranging knowledge of how the rules and examples are put to use in writing. This repetition solidifies the concepts, definitions, and examples in the student’s mind.

Hi! It sounds like this curriculum is very scripted/teacher-intensive. I have a middle-schooler who is very independent in her schoolwork and gets good grades in grammar. Is it possible or advisable for such a student to use this curriculum well mostly independently (obviously with oversight from me as a parent)? I’m also looking at WTM’s other recommendations (Rod and Staff and Hake Grammar).

It would be difficult, as the Core Instructor Text has a good amount of asking the student questions, giving guidance, and so forth. I know of some adult learners who use it that way, but I think middle school would be a tough go. It is extremely unclear on your website which color is which level. I have searched all of the FAQs, read all many descriptions, and have no idea what to purchase. We have completed levels 1-4. Can you please tell me which book I am supposed to to use next? Thank you!

Absolutely! Because it focuses on mastery through repetition, students can start with any of our four Workbook/Key combos; they are not sequential. Each workbook combines with the Core Instructor Text for a full year (or more!) of instruction, and the same instructor book will be used throughout. For example, you might start with Yellow and get through Intermediate Grammar your first year. Your student needs review, so you Intermediate in Blue the second year. Then your student can go on to complete Advanced in both Yellow and Blue.
So, for your first year with GftWTM, you will need a Core Instructor Text, a Workbook in any color, and an Answer Key in the same color. You will use the same Core Instructor Text for all years of study (and all color workbooks).
