First Language Lessons is a simple-to-use, scripted guide to grammar and composition that makes successful teaching simple. This consumable Student Workbook, used alongside the Instructor Guide, gives you everything you need to spend more time teaching and less time preparing lessons, making copies, or gathering supplies.

Components

Level 3 consists of two products: this Student Workbook and the Instructor Guide which is sold separately. Together they make a complete grammar text that covers a wide range of topics- including parts of speech, sentence diagrams, and skills in beginning narration.

Content

    • 345 perforated, consumable pages of exercises for your student. These includes the following :
    • 89 Grammar Lessons with poems for memorization, empty sentence diagram frames, and blank lines perfectly sized for young students’ copywork, dictation, and narration.
    • 7 Writing Letters Lessons
    • 7 Dictionary Skills Lessons
    • 7 Oral Usage Lessons
    • Definitions, Rules, and Lists

This Student Workbook does not include the necessary teaching material nor the directions for how to complete the assigned exercises. Those are found in the First Language Lesson Level 3, Instructor Guide only. The Instructor Guide is a necessary resource when using this workbook.

Available Formats

Choose either: a downloadable PDF or a three-hole punched, bound, paperback.

With a downloadable PDF, if your young grammar student creates zombie cartoons all over his worksheet instead of identifying his helping verbs, you can simply print it out again. (But keep the zombie cartoons. They’ll probably support you in your old age.)

Your purchased, downloadable files are always accessible for re-download, whenever you need them, in your Well-Trained Mind account.

Additional Resources

Are your grammar skills a little rusty? If you didn’t have the benefit of a classical education that included instruction on how to diagram sentences (like the education your children are getting -those lucky ducks!); don’t fret! Stay a few steps ahead of the kids and be able to answer all their questions by adding The Grammar Guidebook and The Diagramming Dictionary to your library. They’re a great resource for all things grammar and the kids will get use of them in the coming years when they’re trying to write those college essays (Ack! It’s coming sooner than you think)!

For a complete writing program, add Writing With Ease!

Need Help?

If you are trying to decide between Level 2 and Level 3 for a third grade student, you can begin in Level 3 because it reviews the concepts taught in levels 1 and 2. Level 3 is appropriate for students in 3rd grade regardless of their level of prior grammar instruction.

What others are saying

  1. 5 out of 5 Highly Recommended

I’m now teaching my fourth student using this grammar curriculum. It is straightforward and I appreciate the structure of the program. It moves in appropriate increments and works with a variety of learning styles. I highly recommend it.

  2. Question

I’m beginning homeschool this year — 7th, 6th, 3rd. They’re coming out of a terrible PS system, and their grammar foundation is minimal. How would you recommend that I level each child? I know they’re technically written for younger students, but will older students benefit?

    • Older students could definitely benefit! We would suggest trying First Language Lessons level 3 for the 3rd grader, and First Language Lessons level 4 for both the 6th and the 7th grader (you’ll want to pick up 1 instructor text for level 4 and 2 of the level 4 workbooks). Try that, and then if you run into specific obstacles/problems in that program, call us at 1.877.322.3445 or email support@welltrainedmind.com to get individual help.
      Best of luck!

  3. You would need both the instructor and the student book, yes.

  4. Question

If I buy the pdf version of the student workbook, could I print it again for my next child or is it only for the child I am currently homeschooling? If so, do I buy pdf versions for each children I have?

    • You can print or copy it for every child in your family. You don’t have to use it just once. But thank you for checking!

  5. Question

Hi, I am unable to view samples for either Level 3 or Level 4 student work books. I click on it and it won’t do anything, and I’ve tried several different browsers. Would you be able to email me samples of each?
