  1. Question

How “open & go” are these lessons for a busy working parent to do with a child who is at school most of the day? We are not homeschooling, but want to make sure he’s getting the most out of reading at home as he is entering first grade — kindergarten was so disrupted with covid restrictions, etc. Need something that takes very little prep and is both FUN and engaging for child to be willing to do it with me on weekend or after school 😉 thanks.

    • Very open & go! It’s fully scripted, and only calls for things like index cards and magnetic letters. Even then, you can always substitute a white board or such (I could never find my magnetic letters when I wanted them, and everything is more fun on a whiteboard). The audio is fun to have and has the great advantage of being able to learn letter sounds and combinations in the car, and the flashcard set has all the phonograms and sight words to practice with, but you can always make do for any one lesson. Fully scripted but very adaptable.

  2. Question

It doesn’t appear the magnetic board is available separately. Can you explain what it is exactly? Thank you

    • It’s just a nice magnetic letter board with a set of letter tiles, plus a second magnetic board to store the letters you’re not using (just makes life easier). It is used in various lessons to spell words and so forth. You can substitute a different magnetic board and letter set that has both upper/lower case and multiples of common letters.

    Question

How long (how many years/grade levels) should this program take? I see it’s listed for K-5, but does that mean the sections can be divided into different years? Is there any info on how much to cover at different age levels? I have a 1st grader and we’re up to lesson 59. She is doing great, but I thought I had to push her more to get through more of the book!

    • It’s listed for K-5 because some students will start it later than others. No need to divide into years; just keep going at the pace where the student is understanding the lesson. A first-grader would typically take somewhere around a year and a half to finish the book.

    • Yes, it does.

  6. Question

Please can you confirm what these flashcards include? Do they include the sight words and all the Vowel sounds and and vowel pairs covered in all the sections in the book? Like aw, ew, oo etc. Thank you.

    • They contain all the letters (vowels and consonants) and the sight words, as well as all the cards for the games that are played in the book. They don’t contain vowel pairs like oo and ew.

  7. Question

My daughters started learning to read at their Montessori school. Now I am starting to homeschool. Is there a placement test in this book?

    • No, there isn’t a placement test. But a detailed list of all the lessons is found on pages 363 to 368 of this sample, so you can see where your daughters can skip ahead: http://downloads.peacehillpress.com.s3.amazonaws.com/pdfs/samples/opgsample.pdf

  8. Question

Do the flash cards cover diphthongs?
May I see an example of a flash card?

    • These flash cards do not cover the diphthongs (though they do contain several words that have diphthongs in them). The audio companion does cover diphthongs, however: https://welltrainedmind.com/p/audio-companion-ordinary-parents-guide/ )
