Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind takes students from basic definitions (“A noun is the name of a person, place, thing, or idea”) through advanced sentence structure and analysis—all the grammar skills needed to write and speak with eloquence and confidence. This text will be used for all 4 years of instruction.

This innovative program combines the three essential elements of language learning: understanding and memorizing rules (prescriptive teaching), repeated exposure to examples of how those rules are used (descriptive instruction), and practice using those rules in exercises and in writing (practical experience).

Each year, parents and teachers go through the scripted dialogue, rules, and examples in the Core Instructor Text; students follow along in any color Workbook (Red and Purple are currently available with Blue coming in the Fall! ). This repetition solidifies the concepts, definitions, and examples in the student’s mind. Instructor notes thoroughly explain any ambiguities and difficulties.

There are four Workbooks, one for each year, but are not done in any particular order. Each Workbook contains the same rules and examples—but each has completely different sets of exercises and assignments, allowing students to develop a wide-ranging knowledge of how the rules and examples are put to use in writing.

Each Workbook comes with its own Key, providing not only answers, but also explanations for the parent/instructor, and guidance as to when the answers might be ambiguous (as, in English, they often are).

All of the rules covered, along with the repeated examples for each, are assembled for ongoing reference in The Grammar Guidebook. This will become the student’s indispensable guide to writing through high school, into college and beyond.

Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind provides you with the following:

Scripted lessons make it possible for any parent or teacher to use the program effectively.

Step-by-step instruction takes students from the most basic concepts through advanced grammatical concepts such as modal and hortative verbs and multiple functions of noun clauses.

Extensive diagramming exercises reinforce the rules and help technical and visual learners to understand and use the English language effectively. All diagrams are thoroughly explained to the instructor/parent.

Text for examples and exercises are drawn from great works of literature, as well as from well-written nonfiction texts in science, mathematics, and the social sciences.

Regular review built into each year of work.

The program is easily customizable to each student’s strengths and weaknesses.

NAME CHANGE: You may have noticed that the Workbooks and Keys for this curriculum are now named by color (“Purple Workbook”) rather than by year (“Year 1”). That’s to help you understand that you can use these workbooks in any order. It’s a four-year cycle but the books can be done in any order. The Core Instructor Text still provides the instructions for all four years. If you have one of the older copies that says “Workbook 1” instead of “Purple Workbook,” don’t worry; the content is still the same.

What others are saying

  1. Question

When will the printed books be available?

    • One person found this helpful

The books are nearly finished at the printer, so they should be available here in the next 2 weeks.

  2. Question

When will the student workbooks for 2, 3, and 4 be available?

    • We are working on those now, and plan to release one each year. #2 is scheduled for publication in Summer 2018.

  3. Question

Grammar intermediate has a 6week free download which is great for us to try out, but will the download have 6weeks of the wookbook to be able to carry out the exercise or will work book need to be purchased?

    • It includes the first six weeks of the workbook too!

  4. Question

Is this a curriculum that could be implemented in a classroom setting?

    • One person found this helpful

Yes, absolutely! The teacher would need a copy of the Core Instructor Text and of the Key, and each student would need a Student Workbook to follow along with the lessons and to do the exercises. For more specific questions about that, you can contact us at [email protected].

  5. Question

If my sixth grader hasn’t studied grammar where would we begin?

    • You can begin with this program. You’d want to buy the Core Instructor Text, the Purple Workbook, and the Key to The Purple Workbook.

  6. Question

I understand that I can use any workbook at any time but is there a theme or time period to each color? Also, for the scripted instruction, how long does a lesson take to go through?

    • No, there is not a time period for each color. As for lesson times…we recommend four lessons per week, but the book says this: “Take as long as you need to finish each lesson…it’s perfectly acceptable to take more than one year to finish a workbook. The earlier lessons are shorter and simpler; they increase in both complexity and length as the book goes on. But especially in the later lessons, don’t worry if you need to divide a lesson over two days, or take more than one week to complete a week’s worth of lessons…The first time through, ask the student to complete each exercise. In subsequent years, however, you can adjust the student’s workload in the earlier (and simpler) lessons so that you can spend more time on the later exercises. If the student remembers and understands the concept, ask her to do the first four or five sentences in the exercise. If she completes them correctly, skip the rest of the exercise and move on. This will allow you to customize the program to each student’s strengths and weaknesses.”

  7. Question

When was this book last revised? Are there older or newer editions of the core instructor text?

    • There are no “revised editions” of this text at this time. It was reprinted earlier this year and a couple of corrections were made. You can see those on our corrections page: https://welltrainedmind.com/corrections/core-instructor-text-grammar-well-trained-mind/

  8. Question

Is there a placement test for this series to determine where to start?

    • No, there isn’t. Sorry. We generally don’t recommend this series to students younger than 5th grade (many wait until 6th, and that’s fine too). Before starting this, the student should have completed “First Language Lessons, Level 4” or a comparable grammar curriculum.

  9. Question

After removing my high school student from the school system, how do I know if he needs this program?

    • Does he have a firm grasp of all the parts of speech and how they are used; of how the parts of a sentence work and how to diagram them; of how to properly punctuate all types of sentences, quotations, etc; and of how to cite sources in a written essay or research paper? If the answer to any of those questions is No, then we’d suggest downloading the sample of this program and taking a look.

  10. Question

So, I was wondering if this program uses parsing of sentences, the four basic sentence structures, as well as sentence patterns (such as s-vi, S-vt-do, s-vl-pa…etc)? I am looking to use this in a community for grades 6-8. The final two books (for older kids) is not out yet correct? Which book would you suggest using for those students that have had 6+ years of grammar? Or or those the books that are not released yet?

    • The next two books are being released this year and next year. Students who have had six years of grammar could start with either the red or purple books (the instructor text stays the same). As for the sentence patterns, we don’t teach them in quite that way, but we do cover all those parts of sentences. Please check out the sample chapters and tables of contents to get a better idea of what is covered in the books.

  12. 5 out of 5 Easy to use

Very teacher friendly. Easy for me to instruct kiddos with. Grammar is not my strength. I am thankful for this curriculum. My children enjoy this grammar. Previous curriculum they have loathed.

  13. 5 out of 5 Perfect!

We’ve been using the free sample and it is perfect for 10th grade after a Charlotte Mason gentle grammar in elementary and middle school.
