Everything you need to teach grammar. Save 10% by getting the whole curriculum in this convenient bundle!

Format: Digital (PDF) downloads

  • The Core Instructor Text (404 pages) provides scripted dialogue for the instructor, along with notes to explain difficult concepts. Each year of study, instructors go through the dialogue, rules, and examples in the Core Instructor Text, as students follow along in that year’s Student Workbook. This repetition solidifies the concepts in the student’s mind.
  • The first of a four-book series, Student Workbook 1 (602 pages) provides detailed exercises in the correct use of English grammar, based on great works of literature as well as classic and contemporary works of science and history. Future Student Workbooks will contain the same rules and examples—but completely different sets of exercises, allowing students to develop a wide-ranging knowledge of how the rules and examples are used in writing.
  • The Answer Key (434 pages) provides clear answers and explanations for the parent/instructor.
  • The Comprehensive Handbook of Rules (102 pages) assembles into one handy reference work all of the principles that govern the English language. Each rule is illustrated with examples from classic and contemporary works of literature, science, history, and mathematics. The Handbook will become the student’s indispensable guide to writing through high school, into college and beyond.

    4 out of 5

We’re on Lesson 3 with a fifth grader. So far so good.
Still easy to use, scripted teacher manual as in First Language Lessons. Key makes checking student’s work easy. Student workbook is going to be really long to print, but I like that the next lesson follows the last on the same page to save space and formatting is clear to read and write in.

  2. Question

I have a child of 12 who, up until now has been in a state school. I am starting homeschooling and wanting to follow this type of classical curriculum. I had thought to start with Grammer for the Well Trained Mind and then add Writing with Ease (3). Would these compliment each other or are they too similar?

    • That would be a great pairing!

  3. Question

I Have a child in eighth grade and two in the tenth grade. We used FFL for elementary, but I have not used a grammar program that I liked since. I’m glad you have available now Grammar for the Well Trained Mind. I’m concerned that my children may be too old for this now. Would it still be useful to them now, and would I use it for the remainder of their years in high-school?

    • This would definitely still be useful for them. They can move through the early lessons rapidly, since those are mostly review.

  4. 5 out of 5 Another great WTM curriculum

I have only taught the first 5 weeks, but I’m really enjoyIng the curriculum. I’m thankful to have Susan Wise Bauer’s wording to teach my children grammar rules that are often above my knowledge. Like 1st Language Lessons, this series is easy to teach and develops a strong foundation in grammar. The publication of Grammar for the Well Trained Mind couldn’t have come at a better time, as my daughter is beginning 5th grade. I highly recommend this curriculum to anyone looking for a complete and thorough grammar education for their children.

  5. Question

Can you tell me if I am understanding this program correctly? Once I buy the complete bundle, I will only need to buy the student pages and key for the successive years. Is this right?

    • Yes, that’s correct!

  6. Question

Will a print edition be available for purchase?

    • It should be available in the next few days! We’ll send out an email, facebook updates, etc.

  7. Question

If your child has been using the Rod & Staff program and has completed Book 7 in that series (this is a program recommended by this author after the end of their early grammar lesson series of four books), where would you start with this series?

    • We’d still recommend starting with Year 1. But you can adjust it to the student’s level of expertise…they don’t have to do every single exercise if it’s practicing a skill they’ve already mastered. Dr. Bauer explains this in the 2nd half of this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxYMQUDp-3c

    Question

Where can I find Writing With Style series or the rhetoric material ?

    • There are no plans to publish a “Writing With Style” book. Our writing program concludes with “Writing With Skill, Level 3.” After that, a student is ready for a rhetoric program such as “Composition in the Classical Tradition” or “The New Oxford Guide to Writing.”

  9. Question

What grade level is appropriate for this curriculum?

    • This curriculum could be used by students in middle school (grades 5-8) or high school.

  10. Question

Is this a middle school course or high school?

    • Either could use it. The majority of users will be in middle school, but a high schooler would also do just fine. It’s a complete grammar curriculum, so after this there would be no need for further grammar study.

  11. Question

My son is in 6th grade. We used Language Lessons for the well trained mind 1-4, and have used Rod and Staff for 5th and 6th grade. (As recommended in the Well Trained Mind.)
What would you recommend for the remaining years of middle school?

    • We’d recommend “Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind,” beginning with Year 1.
