The Creative Writer, Level Two guides middle- and high-school students through an innovative, compelling series of exercises, each one designed to build your skill in the essential ingredients of fiction and poetry.

Product Overview

The Creative Writer, Level Two guides middle- and high-school students through an innovative, compelling series of exercises, each one designed to build your skill in the essential ingredients of fiction and poetry. Then, author Boris Fishman sets you free to create your own recipe for gripping fiction and spellbinding poetry. Use as a follow-up to The Creative Writer, Level One: Five Finger Exercises. Or begin with the second volume as a more advanced introduction to imaginative writing. Each volume contains directions and instructions for the developing writer, as well as detailed guidance for the mentor or teacher.

T.S. Eliot says, “Before I read The Creative Writer, my poetry was no good. I kept trying to write a collection of poems about Dogs. But while I was reading Boris Fishman’s excellent directions on selecting a topic, my cat Mungojerrie walked by, and inspiration struck.”

I’m baffled by the blurb in the product descriptions. In the Level 2 book, it says, “T.S. Eliot says, ‘Before I read The Creative Writer, my poetry was no good. I kept trying to write a collection of poems about Dogs. But while I was reading Boris Fishman’s excellent directions on selecting a topic, my cat Mungojerrie walked by, and inspiration struck.’” And in Level 3, it says “Ernest Hemingway says, ‘Before I read The Creative Writer, I knew nothing about the craft. I was going to give A Farewell to Arms a happy ending. But then Boris Fishman taught me everything I needed to know about writing, editing, revising, bullfighting, marlin fishing, and the way that northern-Italian pasta tastes when you eat it cold, in the autumn morning, as you wait for the Austrian artillery to begin firing at your trench.'”

Wasn’t the author, Boris Fishman, born after Hemingway and Eliot died? Am I missing something? Please explain or correct.

I just received the Level Two: Essential ingredients book. I was looking through the first lesson and it refers to an appendix. There is no appendix. What am I missing?

Is there a sample of level two? I’d like to see how it compares to level one as I consider the appropriate level for my students.

Have an entering grade 7 middle schooler ( first time homeschooling in fall due to Covid) who is an insatiable reader and enjoys writing . Trying to decide on level 2 or 3 to begin. She thinks her LA was very similar to level 1 &2 except she has had no poetry. Which level should she begin with? What duration of time does each level demand, one semester one year?

Are there different editions of these or are they all the same? My daughter is taking a course with WTM and needs these – wondering if I got them from a friend who didn’t end up using them if they’d be the same ones. (Also, you mentioned that one book is 36 weeks, but she has both book 1 and book 2 for an 18-week course. Is that correct?)
