Has Welltrained Mind done anything to address the issue of the files being jumbled when added to a playlist on a device (as noted in the review by Andrew D. Finley)? We encountered the same problem when we bought the Story of the World audiobooks from WTM. I hope they will come up with a better solution for file naming so this is not an issue.

    Math/Science-minded story

    Michelle

Our math/science minded family LOVED this story. We were surprised how myself (and our kids equally enjoyed it). Ages 7, 9 and 11. 2 girls and a boy.

Our kids loved hearing that it was a true story, hardly seemed like someone could manage through all of that, but he did.

It also is encouraging my math/science kiddo to take an interest in languages, particularly Latin.

The files are all jumbled. This is frustrating in so much as when you add your play list they stay jumbled. Trying to be creative though we are in experienced. It’s a great title and Jim Weis does an amazing and captivating read.

    Perseverance in trials

    Julie

It is almost hard to believe this story is true as Nat suffers trial after trial, but it is written beautifully and kept my 10 and 7 year old girls and myself enthralled as we cried, hoped, and cheered for him. It’s a story of true perseverance and trading beauty for ashes; of clinging to goodness and mercy; of working hard as unto God and not just for man; and of peering beyond the present to glimpse the hope and in the beauty in education. We always enjoy being read aloud to by the master readers and this reading by Jim Weiss is no exception. We appreciated and relished this experience. Some concepts or vocabulary will need to be further explained to youngsters to be able to better grasp the story of course, but it abounds with oppourtunity to spark beautiful conversations and hope for the reasons why we study, grow, and learn and lends vision for just where our hard work may lead us. His story is a lesson in the wonder of carrying on to life when the odds and heartbreak are real and stacked against us. It takes the reader out of self, especially self pity, and into the world of possibilities if healthy kindness and determination are chosen over detrimental fixations on what is not healthy like anger, resentment, complaining, bitterness etc. I found this to be Well worth listening to as a family and used it to relate his experience to our modern trials, no matter the size. With such sadness and exponential rises in suicide rates, this book could just help provide a preventative shift in mindset to a future or present
threat of vulnerability. How invaluable would that be?

It’s not dumb to dislike a book! We all have different tastes, and no one is going to like every book they try. But a book review should be both critical and descriptive. For example, stating specifically what you didn’t like about Carry On, Mr. Bowditch. Maybe you didn’t find the protagonist likeable, or thought it was too long. Perhaps you didn’t care for the writing style. Including details of why you did or didn’t like a book helps other people decide if they might like it.

Just some food for thought for your next review!

We love this story. We live in a town with a long history of boat building and sailing that continues today. And my husband is captain, as well, so this book is much more personal for us. The fact that Bowditch’s books are still in use for marine navigation is amazing. We learned a lot about the history of navigation and exploration.. Bowditch is an excellent example of a real life hero. He endures a number of trials and losses and obstacles with faith driven determination.
We are an experienced audiobook family, so this was accessible (with a little help understanding terms) by my 6yo son and 9yo daughter. We have listened to it at least twice this year. Because we live in a rural area, we are able to listen to 3-6 hours or more a week while driving. However, I think it would be a bit challenging at ages less than 8yo without a strong foundation of reading aloud as it is very long.
I rarely give 5 stars, because that means it would have to be truly outstanding and nearly impossible to improve. This audiobookeasily deserves 5 stars. Highly recommend!!!!
