Default s/o: old textbooks name your favorites

I like old textbooks, but I don't know about many. So please name your favorites and even those that might not be your favorite.

Thanks!

Wendy,

You can go to www.books.google.com and do a search using key words such as composition, writing, grammar, mcguffey, arithmetic, primer, reader, etc. and find oodles of old textbooks. You can go to advanced search to search by author. Set your view to full view only. Most of the books that allow full view can also be downloaded in pdf format.

Www.mainlesson.com has a lot of history books and nature readers that are formatted for easy reading online. If you prefer to download in pdf format, you can search for the books you like on google books.

The old books we are currently using include The Story of the Greeks by Helene Guerber and Essentials of Spelling for jr. high by Pearson.

I really enjoyed Ray's Arithmetic as well. We weren't able to make it work as a curriculum, but I was really motivated to make our homeschool more challenging after seeing how advanced their primary school math was.

I also love the compact size of those old textbooks--it reminds me how much effort those kids had to put forth just to get themselves to school.

Someone here recommended Wheeler's Spelling Book and I really like it. We just started using it.
My sister uses Practical lessons in the use of English: for primary and grammar schools

I also like Word Master recommended by Don Potter. I am using this as a supplement with CCC & PR.

I agree with www.mainlesson.com The website also has some helpful "articles" comparing similar books to help you pick the one you want - i.e. several books about Ancient Greece.

We have also been enjoying a couple Elson Readers. I have Books One and Two from my Great Uncle's school days.
